North Carolina's senior senator, Elizabeth Dole, was sworn into office in January 2003. Her legislative priorities include growing the economy and creating jobs, strengthening national security and the military, improving education, and making quality health care more affordable and accessible.
A native of Salisbury, Sen. Dole graduated with distinction from Duke University in 1958 and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She earned a degree from Harvard Law School in 1965 and also holds a masters degree in education and government from Harvard. Since 1996, Sen. Dole has been named numerous times by the Gallup Poll as one of the top ten most admired women in the world.
Over her distinguished career in government, Sen. Dole has served as deputy assistant to President Richard Nixon for consumer affairs, a member of the Federal Trade Commission and assistant to President Ronald Reagan for public liaison. She also held cabinet positions as Secretary of Transportation and Secretary of Labor before leaving the federal government to serve as president of the American Red Cross.
Her long list of awards and honors includes the North Carolina Award from Gov. James Martin and being named North Carolinian of the Year by the North Carolina Press Association.
