| Since being elected to the Sanford City Council, Joe Martin has tackled many important municipal issues, including historic preservation, golf course renovation and downtown Sanford redevelopment. His work has extended well beyond his community, having been appointed by Gov. James B. Hunt in 1994 to serve on the North Carolina Code Officials Qualifications Board, a position he still holds.
A Lee County resident for almost four decades, Martin is involved in ministry and public service as part of St. Stephen Catholic Church. He has been active with the United Way of Lee County for well over a decade, including serving a term as president, and with the American Red Cross for more than six years, serving for two years as chairman. He currently is a board member for the Coalition to Improve the Quality of Life in Lee County.
Martin enjoys all types of sports and has served as a youth sports coach. He and wife Joni live in downtown Sanford; the couple has two children, daughter Claire and son Daniel.
