SANFORD, N.C. It's been called "The Great Recession," an extended period of skyrocketing unemployment and dismal manufacturing markets, but now it looks like the economy might finally be improving.
Noted economist Michael Walden examines the current economic climate and gives his predictions for the future in "Economic Forecast: Sunshine or Storms?" He will appear in Sanford on Mar. 31 as featured speaker for the Committee of 100 quarterly luncheon.
"It looks like there is some sun shining through the dark economic clouds we've experienced for the last two years," says Walden, the William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor at North Carolina State University. "But how bright will the economic sun shine?"
In an engaging style that's earned him fans across the state and beyond, Walden will describe the current outlook for jobs, interest rates and even our standard of living while taking a sober look at what new economic challenges may be ahead.
Walden is a frequent speaker across the state and the author of eight books. His most recent, "North Carolina in the Connected Age," is an analysis of the dramatic changes in the state economy during the last 30 years.
The economist has gathered a loyal following through his work in the media. He has appeared on national television networks, been quoted often in the country's most prominent newspapers and won two national awards for daily radio programs.
Among his many other activities, the professor directs a semiannual economic forecast and writes "You Decide," a biweekly column carried by more than 40 newspapers across the state.
Walden earned his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1978 before moving to the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at North Carolina State University, where he specializes in consumer economics, economic outlook and public policy.
