LEE COUNTY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION Southern Base of the Research Triangle Region NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Thursday, June 5, 2003 COLUMNIST AND PUNDIT BARRY SAUNDERS BRINGS HIS WIT AND WISDOM TO SANFORD SANFORD -- Popular newspaper columnist and political pundit Barry Saunders brings his wit and wisdom to Sanford on June 19, when he speaks to the Lee County Committee of 100. The luncheon meeting is open to the public. In addition to providing his usual sharp social critique, formed while growing up in the southern Sandhills of Rockingham, the (Raleigh) News & Observer columnist is expected to comment on the state legislature -- providing his impressions of the characters and agenda driving legislation in Raleigh. A question-and-answer session will follow Saunders' comments. Saunders began his journalism career at the Atlanta Constitution, a position he held while studying at Morehouse College. Before landing in Raleigh, he worked for the Richmond County Daily Journal in his hometown, published his own newspaper in Richmond County for three years and served as a reporter and columnist for the Post-Tribune in Gary, Ind. His irreverent approach is obvious even in how Saunders approaches his life's work. In a 1997 essay published in InnerView magazine, Saunders discussed his philosophy of writing a newspaper column. "I think the one indispensable trait an effective columnist must possess is a thick skin," he wrote. "You can't be effective and try to be liked by everyone. "Of course, since I've never been popular, I've never had to worry about losing my popularity. (Who'da thunk that being voted 'most likely to end up on death row' would actually turn out to be a career asset?)" Despite his successful writing career -- which includes a book of columns titled, "Do Unto Others ... and Then Run" -- Saunders has gained notoriety statewide for his appearances on the NC Spin television show. He is a regular on the half-hour, weekly political debate program televised across North Carolina. John Daniel, president of the Committee of 100, said Saunders' appearance will offer a lighter look at some serious topics the economic development group often tackles. Though the pundit is known for his acerbic style, Daniel said, he is always entertaining and gives everyone something important to think about. The luncheon meeting at Chef Paul's Cafˇ and Catering begins at noon. All Committee of 100 meetings are open to the public. The cost, including lunch, is $10 for committee members and $15 for the public.
