LEE COUNTY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION Southern Base of the Research Triangle Region NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Thursday, October 4, 2007 NOTED COMMERCIAL DEVELOPER ASSESSES SANFORD AS HOME FOR UPSCALE CHAINS SANFORD -- If you believe many locals, Sanford's retail business scene is missing just one key element -- upscale national chains like Target, Outback Steakhouse and Harris Teeter. Noted commercial developer Jay Lucas will explain how companies like these choose new markets and how this community rates on those all-important criteria when he speaks Oct. 12 at Chef Paul's Cafe and Catering in Sanford. "Retail Sails," his presentation at the Committee of 100's fall luncheon, begins at noon and is open to the public. "What you hear most is that it's all about 'location, location, location,'" says Lucas, who serves as president of the Office and Investment Division of Harry B. Lucas Co. in Carrollton, Texas. "But it's more than just location. It's location, timing, demographics and lifestyle." While retail development is the focus of his presentation, Lucas also will talk about how industries and corporations select new locations. He will then turn his attention to Sanford, analyzing the area's appeal and suggesting how local leaders can make the community more attractive for major commercial investment. The speaker plans to conclude by discussing databases and research tools available to help communities attract new business. Most are available on "Site To Do Business," an online resource designed for real estate professionals and economic leaders. Lucas received his bachelor's degree in finance from the University of Texas at Austin and serves as a board member for STDB Inc., which produces "Site To Do Business." He was recognized by "Realtor Magazine" in 2003 as one of the 25 most influential people in real estate. The Dallas, Texas, native holds the Certified Commercial Investment Member professional credential; has served as national president of the Chicago-based CCIM Institute, which confers the credential; and has received a long list of awards. All Committee of 100 meetings are open to the public. The cost, including lunch, is $15 per person for the general public and $10 per person for members.
