"Being Successful During Soft Times" is the subject of Quarles' presentation, scheduled for Nov. 21, noon, at Chef Paul's Cafˇ and Catering. Before taking over the reins in Raleigh almost three years ago, Quarles spent three years as publisher of The Modesto (Calif.) Bee. The 51-year old executive also served as president and publisher of The Herald in Rock Hill, S.C.; The Record in Stockton, Calif.; and the Coloradoan in Fort Collins, Colo. He is a member of the National Association of Minority Media Executives and past chairman of the executive committee for the Newspaper Association of America. Committee of 100 president John Daniel said he looks forward to Quarles' presentation and expects the publisher's perspective to provide insight for local leaders, as they continue working to enhance the community. The November meeting is the third held this fall featuring noteworthy speakers from around the region. John Hood -- author, political commentator and president of the John Locke Foundation in Raleigh -- addressed the group in September, and state secretary of commerce Jim Fain was featured last month. All Committee of 100 meetings are open to the public. The cost, including lunch, is $10 for committee members and $15 for the public.
